Transformers are used in audio and video technology to convert current, voltage or frequency

Transformers are part of many electronics

A transformer is an electrical device and transfers energy from one circuit to another by magnetic coupling. It usually disposes of several coupled windings or one tapped winding and a magnetic core. A transformer is known in the electronics sector as a quite simple electrical device. However, transformers fabrication, transformer materials and transformer technology are constantly improved. Due to technological progress in the transformers manufacturing sector and numerous innovations in the past years, lots of electronics appliances were developed that work without any transformer. However, many electronics depend on a transformer. Electronics systems disposing of transformers support the conversion of Direct Current to Alternation Current or AC to DC. Devices might change DC’s voltage or current and change the frequency of AC supply.

Transformers are used in a great variety of applications. They are, for example, essential for high voltage power transmission. Audio frequency transformers are also used in the telephone industry or for stage microphones. These transformers are typically quite small and couple the microphone to radio receivers and audio amplifiers.

In video technology, a transformer is integrated in video recorders for VHS or Beta tapes. Especially when it comes to long distance electronic power transmission, powerful transformers are vital. Transformers manufacturers and wholesalers also supply the steelmaking industry with power transformers. In the industrial application sector, also rotary and sliding transformers support the effective and quick transmission of signals or power. There are electronics components, quite similar to transformers, which are used for position, distance or angle measurement.
The electronics sector has become an international market. Manufacturers, suppliers and wholesalers are represented around the world and face a rapidly changing market. Consumer behaviour has shown that end customers for consumer electronics demand for intelligent and low-price electronics, which, however, dispose of a high level of automation and easy usage. Product innovation cycles are getting shorter and shorter and most devices have planned obsolescence as follow-up models are developed and marketed quickly. Another aspect of the internationalisation of the electronics market is the establishment and the amendment of international standards. Standardisation supports electronic components suppliers or consumer electronics manufacturers globally by defining coordination rules, quality characteristics and uniform measures. This is especially important to the transformers fabrication industry. Assuming that producers of transformers or semiconductors have the same technological know-how and resources, a subcontractor in China or Germany might manufacture a transformer component which a US factory implements in its products.
