Optical fabrication is vital for the telecommunications sector
Optical fabrication - an important sector of industry
Optical fabrication requires glass or plastic to manufacture fibers. They are designed to guide light along their length by internal reflection. In the international electronics sector, fibers and optical technology devices are used as electrical components in cables which are integrated in many electrical appliances today. Especially for communications cables optical fibers are used. With optical technologies, broadcasters or telecommunications companies are able to reliably and cost-effectively transmit digital data over longer distances. Pure electronic transmission – in comparison to optical devices – is only able to transmit smaller data rates. In the optical manufacturing industry, there are several methods used to produce fibers. Thus, the production method depends on the application for which the fibers are used.
Lowered cost of fiber communications systems and optical engineering provided the optical industry with an international boom. Today optical fiber manufacturers are found all over the world. There are also many fiber component manufacturers, assembly plants and wholesalers.
In cables, one or more wires or even optical fibers are bound together with a protective jacket surrounding the electrical component. There are combination cables, which contain both, electrical wires and optical fibers. A traditional cable, however, is made of copper due to its excellent electric conductivity. Cables can also be manufactured with the cheaper resource aluminium. Cables in electronics support the generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption of electric power and are to a great extend invisible for the user.
The industrial as well as the consumer electronics markets have become internationally nowadays. Digital or electronic standards have been introduced and implemented to allow compatibility and the comparison of devices and components. Standards define rules, uniform measures and quality criteria, to which a participating manufacturer abides during the production, for example during the diodes fabrication process. Assuming that, for example, manufacturers of laser diodes, LED diodes or semiconductors have the same technological know-how and resources, a subcontractor in China or the USA might manufacture a component which a German factory implements in its end consumer product.
However, the electrical boom has also a dark side: As many electronic devices are manufactured of components whose ingredients are not biodegradable or even toxic, recycling and electronics waste disposal systems have to be installed. So called E-waste is created when electronics or electronics components are no longer used, thrown away, are outdated or not repairable. There are also recycling machines which dismantle electronics and electrical components, such as cables, to allow the correct recycling methods.
